Because its January and many of us are thinking about new starts and positive changes, I decided to jump on the budget train with my friend Erin and her $100 Room Challenge to makeover my downstairs bathroom
Obviously, a room makeover is not the only way to start off the year fresh and I did consider several other options. For instance, I briefly contemplated taking up yoga but after a long 2 seconds of deep consideration I decided against it.
Another option for the new year was to take on cleaning and organizing my unfinished basement.
My basement is in horrendous shape so on the surface this sounds like a great idea. The problem is, theres so much stuff down there I fear I could get lost for days maybe months and I have a family to think about.
So, for the sake of my loved ones and because I don’t trust my family to turn in a pretty photo showing only my best side for the missing persons milk carton shot, I’m going to steer clear of the basement.
Option C was to take a perfectly decent bathroom and painstakingly make it over while spending almost no money. Now we’re talking!
This sounds totally reasonable; bathroom makeover it is!
I’m kidding, giving the bathroom a new look was always option A and I’m super excited to join in the $100 room challenge.
Also, I never considered yoga, not even for two seconds. I’m not saying I’ll never take up yoga, but I will say, it’ll probably take installing a donut bar in the workout room to get me there.
So on that note, do you want to see my little bathroom and talk about the changes I hope to accomplish with no more than $100 dollars?
Small Bathroom Before Refresh…
This is the current look in the bathroom.
It’s not bad but it has a few issues and I’m ready for a new look.
1. Wall color change, Light fixture update and mirror swap…
The first step will be to change the stripes with an inexpensive wall treatment. I have plenty of paint left over from my son’s comic bedroom makeover making cost for the wall paint $0 on this project.
Also on the list, is to come up with a lighting solution to update the wall fixture. This one will be more difficult. I can not blow the whole budget on one light fixture so I’ll have to go with a small change and make the best of it.
I’d like the mirror to go too. I don’t know if I’ll be able to find what I’m looking for at a super cheap price but I’m gong to be hunting the sales and thrift shops with high hopes.
2. Bathroom Storage…
The big issue in this bathroom is the lack of storage. We do have small cylinder to hold the extra TP but as you can see, it doesn’t hold much and most of the time an opened package of toilet paper lay on the floor next to the empty TP container.
As lovely as this is, I’m going to try to come up with a better way.
I can’t guarantee I’ll be successful but I’m going to give it a good try anyway.
3. New Bathroom Color Scheme…
To keep things simple & bright, the bathroom will have a white background with black accents that have modern touch. For the art work, I have some creative ideas up my sleeve but you’ll have to wait and see because I’m still planning out the pieces I want to create. It should be good!
That’s the makeover plan in a nut shell. I know it doesn’t sound like much but I think you will be pleasantly surprised when some of the ideas I have swirling around in my head come to life.
I’ll be posting an update each week in January and the reveal will be January 31st. I hope you come back and check on me because I’ll be swimming in paint and projects and this one could be a real challenge. I’m pretty sure it will work out but with the tight timeframe and budget I’d be lying if I said I was 100% confident.

You always put a smile on my face. Yoga 🙂 I have no doubts that you will do something amazing in here! We have a powder room that has the same feel. Pedestal sink. No storage. We created a little shelf, but it only holds a couple rolls of TP 🙂 Excited to see your creativity in here!
Hi Jenny,
Though your bathroom is already so cute I can totally understand the need for storage and am excited to see what you do.
Can’t wait to see what you do with your bathroom!
I’m doing the $100 Room Challenge too! Can’t wait to see what you do!
I’m glad you’re not going to get lost in your basement. 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you do in here. For the light, you can probably just change the globes to something else.
Can’t wait to see the storage issue addressed. I’ve always wondered what people do with sinks like that!
I would always vote for a room renovation over yoga! Can’t wait to see what you do in here, especially since I need storage ideas!
I love your makeovers and redesigns so much …. I may or may not have been known to actually wake up my husband to show him the latest thing you have painted. Therefore, I am excited too see your latest project as it progresses. (My husband? Maybe not so much!)
Fellow small bathroom renovator over here – best of luck! Also, I lol’d at the donut bar comment.
