These last few weeks have been a flurry of a DIY projects creating a nautical bedroom makeover for my oldest son. I’m really excited with the final result and can’t wait to show you.
This room project is part of the One Room Challenge from Linda at Calling It Home and it’s been a blast to be able to participate. But to be honest, I went into this challenge completely unprepared and without a plan. While I knew of the challenge, I didn’t know when it started. When I finally found the information, the first post was due the very next day. Yikes! I had some catching up to do right off the bat.
I didn’t have a plan or a design. Heck, I didn’t even know what room I would pick. I quickly talked with my husband to make sure he was on board with my taking on the extra project and the potential art hurricane that could be unleashed on the house in the process. He was supportive and suggested I do one of the kids rooms.
My 14 year old son James has been wanting a marine life themed room. That seemed easy enough to do in a few weeks so I picked his room to start with. Making the decision even easier was the fact that his room was atrocious and in desperate need of everything. Here is what I started with.
Teen Bedroom Before Pictures (warning, it’s not lovely)
The day I needed to put up that first entry post I ran up and snapped these photos. Yes his room really looked like that!
Then I sat down at the computer to quickly post and enter the challenge. In 15 minutes I came up with this mood board as a launching place to a plan for the room. ( you can see my mood board on post week 1)
Nautical Bedroom Beginnings
Having no time was actually a blessing here. I have a tendency to over think things and this forced me to pick something and just start. The first week was slow because I was thinking through ideas.
I had two problems to solve in the room. First, I had almost no money to spend. So what’s new, right? The second was the room is only 11’ by 12’, on an awkward angle and has only one window.
Lastly, I had a limited amount of time.
My strategy to overcome the problems of a small boxy room and lack of money was to go about the design process focusing on my strengths and not what I was lacking. This led me down the road of DIY and painting. I figured I may not be able to buy a lot but I can paint the heck out of this room. I fell in love with a shark tooth pattern so I started the room by hand-painting shark teeth on the back wall.
Hand Painted Wall (aka poor man’s wallpaper)
Was this nuts? Maybe, but what was I to do? I knew what I wanted and knew I didn’t have the funds for designer wallpaper.
My choices were either a boring wall or suck it up and get painting.
Yes, it was mind numbing at first but once I began to see the wall come together I really enjoyed going in there to paint. The wall took the longest by far and ate up a major chunk of the time. (Check out the video at the bottom of the page)
Furniture Makeover
Next was the furniture. A few years ago, I picked up this old bedroom set for around $100. The set included a headboard, footboard, two dressers and a night stand. I only needed the long boy dresser at the time so the rest of the set went to the basement.
Needing furniture for the room, I pulled up the remaining pieces out of the basement and gave them a makeover. (Check out week 3 and 4 for more before pictures. )
By mimicking the design of the handles I was able to create a striking update for little cost.
To keep it interesting, I changed up the headboard design by adding the tentacle to the window like panels.
DIY Modern Ceiling light
The DIY light fixture was a random idea I came up with two weeks ago. I knew I would need help since I was incredibly limited on time. So I took the idea to my dad.
First I made a mockup of the light I envisioned by cutting and taping drinking straws together. It was quite humorous but effective.
Then I went to my local Home Depot store and purchased the supplies.
Armed with a bag of cooper fittings and a fancy drinking straw example, I headed to dad’s house so I could make sure I got the wiring just right. It’s may be my favorite DIY in the room.
What do you think? I am crazy happy with it. It was about 70 bucks in parts because copper is pricey but it is every bit worth the result. My son loves it!
DIY Cornice Box
The next project was the cornice box. My husband was biting at the bit to get his hands on building something for the room. I’m pretty easy going about most things but when it comes to creative projects, I don’t share well. And when I do agree to let someone help me, I hoover over them the whole time. I admit, I’m awful when I get on one of my creative benders.
None the less, time was an issue so I had to release control and accept assistance. My husband did a great job building the box for me. All I had to do was paint it. Taking that off my list was a big help.
DIY Copper Pipe Shelves and Desk
The other monster project was creating the desk and shelves.
Once again, time was not on my side and I had to make a trip to good old Dad. I seriously have the best dad ever. I talked over my desk plans and the shelf system I was cooking up and Dad helped gather the supplies and put together the copper pipe structure.
He was funny when I explained the simple desk structure. He insisted that if it didn’t have a drawer then it was just a table and not a desk! So sure enough, the next time I saw the desk, it had a working drawer. You were right Dad, the drawer is handy. Thank you
Also the desk chair was another old item around the house that I painted up just for the room.
The Homemade Paintings
Another fun project to inexpensively add more color in the space was to paint my own artwork with the shark and octopus paintings. By stretching my own canvas, I was able to make a large painting that would fit perfectly above the bed.
Okay, I have to confess, I started the artwork 3 days ago. Time management clearly isn’t one of my strengths. I wanted to created more than two paintings for the room but I ran out of time. Whomp Whomp.
Fortunately, my husband didn’t complain too much when yesterday evening I asked him to go to the lumber store because I wanted him to help me make two custom frames for the paintings. I need them for tomorrow morning! What? That is not completely reasonable? He only used a few choice words when I dropped that last minute gift on him. He was either in an unusually good mood or he has some secret plan to make me pay later. I fear it may be the later.
Nautical Bedroom Project Purchases
The entire room was done for under $500. To keep the room design at a price level I could afford, I saved money by going all DIY and using accessories that I already owned. I did purchase a few things. The bedding, lamp, and a couple of accessories came from Target. I also found a few accessories and the fun pillows on the bed at Marshall’s.
The awesome mirror above the dresser was surprise blessing given to me by my good friend and neighbor. How amazing is that?! Thank you Melissa.
Also on the purchase list was wood for the cornice and picture frames. And again, super Dad came to my aid and gave me the copper for the desk and shelves.
I want to thank Linda from Calling IT Home for hosting this challenge. The one room challenge is a blast and will be back in the fall with bigger and better creative ideas. I’m already brainstorming and plan on being prepared next time!
I am grateful to my husband and Dad for all the work you did helping me out. I’m also very thankful for my Mom who continuously encourages me to blog and share my passion for creativity. I love you so much Mom.
I plan on going over the details of some of the DIY projects in the room over the next few weeks. If there is one in particular you would like more info on, let me know in the comment section below and I will work on a post to detail the process.
Happy Creating,

Is there anyway to buy the shark picture?
Hi Erynn, I’m sorry; it is the only one. I drew and painted it just project.
What a super cool and fun boys room! From the artwork to the wallpaper, I know my son would love it! thanks for the inspiration.
Thank you Michael!!
The piping for the desk was quite an undertaking! It looks fantastic. . .and I love the shark tooth wall paper. My ten-year-old would love it!
Thank you so much Phil! The desk was the biggest challenge but completely worth it.
You did a FABULOUS job! Great creativity!
Oh I love the shark in a t shirt I would totally buy that.
This is so gorgeous! I grew up with an artsy mom, too, who did this kind of thing routinely. Alas, I can’t even begin to paint like that. However, if I were to try to create a room like that, I might use a stencil of whale, fish, or ship outlines. I would look for downloadable, printable art and frame it myself, or find large scale fabric with nautical themes. Lots of ways for us crafty, non-artsy moms to get a similar look!
Thanks for sharing your project!
Awesome room for teenaged boy. Shelves and desk are really ingenious, pictures look like a true artists. You have great ideas and real talent.
Thank you so much Narn! Have a wonder weekend.
XO, Jenny
This is ridiculously amazing!! I cannot even believe you hand-painted that wall!! And the whole time, I kept thinking we’d get to a point where you would give me a source for that amazing painting of the hammerhead in a sweater vest, because I have to have it… and you hand-painted that too!?! I am a nut for animals in clothes, and this is one of my favorite that I’ve seen!! Excellent job!
I love everything about this space! The copper pipe shelving, the dresser, the art! the light fixture! Looks great 🙂
Wow, amazing makeover! The wall is just wow!!!

Hi Jennifer,
Everything is so imaginative and excellently done! It’s hard to say that my favorite things I want to know more about, are the copper ceiling light and the desk / pipe shelving unit. Choosing them leaves off all the fantastic painting projects. How to choose…
I found your blog thanks to a link from Knick of Time.
Hi Nancy, you are really so kind. I truly appreciate you coming over and taking the time to leave me such a nice comment. I hope you have the best day and a wonderful weekend
Hugs, Jenny

That is a very interesting idea! I especially love the desk. My son would love that! I have always wanted to do a theme for my boys’ room but they both like very different things so it’s hard to come up with something that they will both agree on. Some day! #waywow
Wow–so impressive! I love all of it. The light fixture, the shelf, the wall…swoon! Thanks for linking up to the Talk of the Town Link Party!
Oh my gosh! It looks AMAZING! Well done, Jennifer!
So creative and cute. Everything looks fabulous….truly a designer’s showcase. Thanks for sharing your creativity at DI&DI.
Wow! You did an amazing job – your Dad and husband too. Love to know how you did the light and desk. Congratulations!
Oh. My. Goodness!!! I cannot believe this room! First, I am SO impressed that you painted all those shark teeth. It turned out ah-mazing! And the paintings you did are so perfect for the room. Love, love, love that desk (good job to your dad for adding the drawer). I think it’s hilarious that we both snapped shots of our boy bedroom befores with the beds unmade. That’s how my kids’room typically look 🙂 Wonderful job!
Oops, right as I pushed the comment button, my puppy decided to add a comment as well (T.32) right in the middle. I really do know how to spell 🙂
This is fantastic! Like everyone else, I cannot believe you hand-painted that wall! The DIY light and shelves are just amazing. Awesome Job! I just finished my ORC, too (so glad it’s finished!), but actually found you on the Dream. Create. Inspire link party.
Rachel@TrailerTrashTreasureTrove
Wow…wow…wow!!! I can’t believe you hand painted that amazing wall. I think I would have given up after a little section. It is fabulous!!!! Love the materials you used for the desk and shelves. Great job!!!
Holy Wow! I can’t believe you hand painted that wall paper, did you use a stencil to keep the sizes consistent? Every detail of the room is amazing, I am especially blown away by the shelf and desk unit, that is crazy cool! I bet your son is pretty proud of his talented Mom! Great job, magazines will be calling…
Jenna
Hi Jenna. He loves it too but as you probably know when kids grow up with artsy moms it sort of becomes the “norm”. However I know from growing up with an artist mom myself that one day you look back and really love all the creative blessings that were part of your childhood. As for the wall, check out Week 1. I cut the pattern out and used it to make a faint basic outline to mark the spot of where each tooth should go. Then I went back and drew and painted each by hand. :). Thank you so much for the compliment and coming by today!!!! Hugs my friend,
Jenny
Wow this is amazing !!! I love the nautical theme especially the octopus, you are very talented and creative. I think your lamp design and desk in copper are genius ! This is one of the best room makers I’ve seen in fact probably the best. Well done you should feel really proud of your work it is truly awesome.
First timer, just linked from the #tttparty and all I can say is wow! We are two years into our new home chronicling renovations as well and this room gives me hope that if I just put my mind to it, it can be done! Loving the personal touches, from the painted wall to your dad making the light fixture and desk. Clearly creativity runs in your family! Great Job!
Hi Paige. Oh we could be great friends! We are almost two years in this house and I look around wondering why many of the rooms still look like they are waiting for someone to move in and hang a picture on the wall! Lol. But no more Paige, we can do it! 😉
Xo -Jenny
Wow! That room is completely awesome! I cannot get over the fact that you had painted the teeth on that wall – I think it looks much better than your inspiration picture! And the copper light and desk.. awesome! I actually love everything about the whole room.. shave the whales LOL! Does your son love it as much as all your DIY admirers do?
Lol thank you Jen. Yes he really does. He was almost never in his room before. Now you can find him hanging out in there all the time. Shave the whales is one of his favorites! We hide it just to tease him sometimes. We are awful around here ;). He is not amused.
Thank you so much for the comment love.
Hugs, Jenny
I don’t think I can add anything that hasn’t been said already. You are a talented painter. I am mind blown you hand painted all those teeth and my fav artwork is the blue tentacle painting.
I am amazed by the furniture makeover but I LOVE that copper pipe wall fixture/bookcase and of course the matching desk. OH M G. amazing idea.
Your dad was so right, a desk needs a drawer and it looks just better with it. 🙂
Hi TwoPlusCute you bio on your webpage is so sweet. All of us moms can all relate in one way or the other. Thank you for your kind words. There is nothing like finding yourself cash poor in the middle of a challenge to bring out the creativity! Lol.
Wishing you a great week
Hugs, Jenny
You did such a fabulous job! I’ll be honest, I wasn’t in love with the shark tooth wall at first, but it works perfect with the room! So creative! Thanks for sharing at Dishing It & Digging It!
Haha Lori. The shark tooth wall is a little odd out of context. But it fits James so well and in person it probably translates a little better. Trust me if it hadn’t been sharks, he would have had me doing some paleontology theme. Uggg. ;).
Thank you so much for coming by
Hugs,
Jenny
What a great makeover! Lobe the unique desk area! Thanks for joining Home Sweet Home!
Thank you so much Sherry!!
Xo -Jenny
Every part of this project is absolutely incredible! I can definitely say you clearly have a lot more patience than I do. That hand painted wall is awesome. The custom artwork is even more so. Thank you so much for sharing this wonderful project with us at Merry Monday this week!
Oh Thank you Marie! I don’t know that I have more patience than you. I just love to paint and it was for my son so that sort of upped the will power. Thank you for coming by.
Wishing you a fabulous day!
Xo-Jenny
Hi Jennifer! Just popping by to let you know that your amazing project is featured at Merry Monday this week! Thank you again for sharing with us. Have a wonderful week. 🙂
I want this to be my room!!! It’s so fun! Thanks for sharing at the Monday Funday Party!!
Lol . Oh I want it to be my room too because it is the only clean room in the house right now! We haven’t recovered from the DIY insanity that left the house looking like a crew of frat boys moved in overnight.
Thank you for coming by! Hugs, Jenny
Wow! Amazing what you accomplished, especially when you kind of started behind the pack on this great project. I am so impressed with the room, your son must love it! Fantastic.
Thank you Chloe! James loves it. It’s been a blast but it was exhausting.
Wishing you a great week!
Hugs, Jenny
You did such an outstanding and awesome job on redoing your son’s room! I hope he loves it as much as I do.
Thank you so much Carol. He has been very sweet and grateful about it. Thank you so much for stopping by!

Wow wow WOW! You are one talented woman and I just love that you were able to get help with things from your dad – my dad is my go-to for stuff like that too! So sweet 🙂 Your hand-painted details take the cake in this room, although I’m also head over heels for the copper light fixture and desk! Amazing!!!
W.O.W. You are one talented lady! I’m speechless at what you were able to do in the short time you had. This room would have taken me a couple years . . .no, I think my teenage son would have been married and have a son of his own by the time I put all this together! The whole space is incredible! Thanks so much for sharing with us at Snickerdoodle Sunday! Looking forward to seeing all the project posts from this room! Pinned 🙂
This room is over the top beautiful! I love the shelving!! Great job!
Jenny, I love every bit of it! I especially can’t wait to see more info on the desk! We’re getting ready to do our two older boys’ rooms & I’ve pinned several desks out of wood & pipes…I LOVE the shelving you added to your version & the copper is amazing. I am really enjoying your blog & creativity!
Christie
Wow. Just wow. You and your Dad need to patent that light fixture and then set up an Etsy shop and sell them. It is stunning. And so is the copper desk/shelving combo. Love it. The painting makes me smile–and, oh, girl, that hand painted “wall paper.” Amazing! So glad I got to see this. Congrats on finishing the ORC! (I’ve done it 5x now. Only finished all the way on time, once.)
Jen this was a seriously amazing makeover. I have so much respect for you for having the tenacity to paint that wall. It looks amazing. And if that’s not enough you have gone and added so many other wonderful accents, like the desk and shelving. Finally, you ae a true artist to make the paintings. I would be honored if you would share this at our link party this weekend.
Oh Thank you Mary!! I really appreciate that so much. I have you on my list to get over to 😉 Thank you for the invite.
Hugs,
Jenny

Thank you and same to you Vel. You had quite a great boys room yourself! Thank you for coming by my fellow ORC friend. Wishing you a great week,
Jenny
The shark tooth wall is SERIOUSLY AMAZING! It’s such a statement. I thought it was wallpaper. I had to pick my mouth up off the floor when I discovered you painted that! Love the attention to detail you created with the various paint colors & shadows. Fabulous job!!!
Awe thank you so much. I really love it now that it is done. But I have to admit that half way through, I was thinking I needed to seriously examine the kind of decisions I make!. Lol
I appreciate the sweet comment and your taking the time to stop by.
Have a great week Shara!
-Jenny
Wow, everything about the room is beautiful. That shelving system is incredible! I’d love to see a tutorial on that!
Hi Trisha! I’m going to work on that this week. 🙂 I will shoot you a message when I get it up.
Have a great week and thank you so much for coming by. I really do appreciate your kind words and visit.
-Jenny
Omgeee!!! You are so awesome. The desk and the wall are to die for…seriously. Would love to know the cost of putting a desk like that together. I think my dd may like this idea.
Thank you so much Erlene!! I will work on putting that together for you this week, The desk wasn’t too bad but it took a lot of copper pipe for the shelving. Because of that, the shelves were easily the most expensive item in the room.
Thanks for the feed back, I look forward to getting that info together.
Have a great week Erlene!
-Jenny
Seriously, Jenny you are so gifted! I know you spent countless hours in that room, especially painting all those teeth…but now it’s spring so you need to emerge from the house. I miss our backyard chats!
Catherine I’m coming outside!!!!!!!!!! Finally!!! Now if only it would stop snowing in May 😉
Jenny, I bet James has the coolest room among all his friends. I love the pipe desk, shelving and light. And the art work. Great job. Thank you for sharing at Your Inspired Design.
Thank you Carol. I don’t know if he has the coolest room but his friends sure do like it so I must have done something right. Most importantly, he loves it and that makes me a happy mom.
have a great week, jenny
The copper finishes throughout are EVERYTHING!!!! xx
Elise, I am so glad you like that! thank you
Have a wonderful week ORC friend
-Jenny
I can’t believe you hand painted all of those teeth. They look amazing! I love a good DIY budget friendly room and this is one of the best I’ve seen. Great work!
Thank you Amanda. I love a budget friendly room too. It always feels more satisfying when I can afford it and still get what I want. Thank you for the kind words. I really appreciate it.
Hugs, Jenny
Jenny, I absolutely love it! What does your son think? Do you have instructions to complete the other son’s room now too? LOL I want you to come do my room. The pieces in this room are gorgeous, love each and every one. And you put so much of yourself into it. How special is that! I love your artwork, and the octopus is my favorite! The one on the wall and the bed. I can’t tell you how impressed I am, you inspire me! xx
Thank you so much Nikki! I think he was a little humbled by all the effort but he loves it. He has been doing his homework up at his new desk which is nothing short of a miracle. For years he has done his homework at the kitchen counter and has refused to do it in his room. I get my kitchen back!!! wohoo!
Jenny! Holy Cow! I don’t know where to start! You already know how I feel about that shark tooth wall…unbelievable. But that copper desk and bookshelf? Absolutely perfect. I imagine your son must be thrilled. What did he say? Does he love it?
Well done my friend…you inspire me.
Hugs, Lynn
HI Lynn! We are a bit exhausted over here from the final push to get it all done. You know how it is 😉 James really loves his room. He has been showing it off to his friends so I know he likes it. That and he won’t let his brother in there anymore.
Thanks for stopping by
Hugs- Jenny
Everything about this room is amazing! That copper pipe shelving and desk, the wallpaper and octopus print…stunning!
Oh thank you! I love that you think it is wallpaper and a art print 🙂 I actually painted both the wall and canvas so that is complement!
Your son must be deliriously happy with his new room! The hand-painted shark tooth wall is exquisite (so much more special than any wallpaper you could have installed). I also love both the copper desk/shelving unit and lighting fixture while your art adds the perfect touch of whimsy to the room. Congratulations!!!
Thank you so much Emily Jane. He is really happy!!! Which of course makes me happy
i love this! such a fun space- that paper is amazing!
Thank you Cassie!! I had a lot of fun with it. And I love that you like the paper 🙂 I painted it on and was hoping it would look similar to wallpaper so that is very cool you like it.
The dresser and all the copper pieces are amazing. Very inspirational!
Thank You Justynn . I appreciate that! Hugs – Jenny
LOVE EVERYTHING JENNY!!! A brilliant design for your son’s room…the desk, dressers, walls, paintings, light….AWESOME!!! Thank you for sharing your gift!
Thank you So MUCH Michelle. You are so kind. I love that you stopped over to see 🙂 Have a great weekend -Jenny
That is truly unbelievably awesome. I love the pipe shelving. And pretty much all of everything else. The wallpaper!
Ahhhhh thank you Danielle!
I know Danielle, the pipe shelving is incredible. Wish I had that much talent to make it too.
