The last few weeks have been nuts! I’ve been working really hard on the One Room Challenge and pulling together this pop art bedroom makeover for my son Josh. It’s not completely done but I’m really happy with how far it has come in a few short weeks. I hope you like today’s reveal!
Do you remember how the room looked a few weeks ago?
It was a mess! I removed all the furniture and started from scratch.
Pop Art Bedroom
Comic Burst Wall
I finally finished painting my halftone (dots) comic burst wall. To make painting the dots faster I cut circle templates with my silhouette and used them like a stencil. The inside of the yellow comic burst is clear whiteboard paint so Josh can use it as a message board!
If you want to know more on how I started this wall, check out my post Wall Art Painting Tips
DIY Bed
One of the reasons this room is taking so long is I spent very little money and DIY’ed everything. Guys I made a BED! And I don’t mean sheets and pillows, I mean I sat down and came up with a design and made this thing from scratch. If you could see my face right now I’m smiling like the Cheshire cat.
I’m fortunate to have my Dad living close by because he was a great help on the bed. He came up with the great idea to use old bed rails. We made the the head board and foot board fit the old side rails! Dad is a crazy talented guy.
Once the headboard and footboard were constructed and painted, I finished off the design with these fabulous stainless steel peel and stick tiles. Aspect tiles kindly provided me with all the tiles I needed to finish off the bed.
This was my first time using the peel and stick tiles and I’m officially a fan! They were incredibly easy to apply and look amazing. I’m already looking around my house for other places to add these tiles.
Comic Wall
One of my other ideas in the room was to create a comic wall and fill it with movie quotes.
Josh loves it. The middle bubble is empty so it can be used as a white board too!
Art Desk
Okay can we just talk about this art desk? It was a pain. I purchased it a while back on Craigslist with the intention to give it to Josh at some point.
The veneer was peeling badly and the top was broken. I was able to patch the veneer but the top couldn’t be saved. A new top was made for the desk to include a Lucite pencil catcher. The project was a time sucker but I’m giddy with how it turned out.
It has a very cool cubby on the side to slide in your artwork. I painted the door to give a nod to Lichtenstein pop art.
I didn’t have a stool for the desk so I took a shop stool from the garage and gave it some red spray paint.
Painted dresser
Another big project was fixing and painting this old dresser.
One of the final steps was to hang the new ceiling light and finish off the walls by outlining each wall with a painted black line.
I still have my paintings to finish and maybe some shelves to make but I’m very happy with the outcome so far and Josh seems to be pleasantly surprised. He loves the desk best of course but I think I like the bed best.
What do you think of my crazy room? I would love to hear your thoughts. Leave me a comment or head over to my face book page and you can comment there too. Paint Yourself a Smile on Facebook
I want to thank Linda from Calling it home for hosting another great challenge and look forward to doing it all over again in the spring!
I will likely give an update in a week or two when I hang the paintings. They are so much fun so I really want to show you.
Happy Creating,

What did you make the talking bubbles out of so that they would adhere to the walls? I was curious if you used vinyl or another medium.
Hi Dolly, I used a projector to lay out the design and I hand painted them on the wall. 🙂
Wow, fantastic! If this was my son room, he would never want to leave it. You did and excellent and very creative job.
What a fantastic room! I love everything you did. Just AMAZING!!
Thank you so much Joy!!!
Amazing. Wow.
INCREDIBLE! You never cease to amaze me. I wish you lived close by so you could help me with my boys’ rooms. They look worse than your “before” pictures! 😀
Rachel You are so kind! It would be totally fun to do a kids room with you!
THIS. IS. AWESOME!!!
Aww thanks sooooo much Amber!!
Wow, wow wow! I really can’t believe you created this from scratch, you are so creative I am in awe! I would never be able to think up something like this, you have done such a great job. Your son must be made up!
WOW! So amazing!!! You just inspired me so much!!! Thank you! I love this makeover! 😉
This is amazing! My son would love a room this cool. I absolutely love the whiteboard burst. Greta idea!
Thank you so much Kati! One of my son’s requests was to be able to draw on the wall. I’m glad you like it!
Hugs, Jenny
Jen, you are amazing! I am sure that Josh loves the room, it’s really cool. I can’t pick which part I love best, but I do see all the love you put into the room. As a painter I know how long the walls took and that, more than anything, tells me how much your kids mean to you. That is so cool. Love the bed, you certainly designed a winner, I’ve never seen anything like it, amazing. The desk and stool are cool and that dresser is so fun and unique! Love the room, when you get the paintings done please post, would love to see more of your work!
Thank you so much Nikki. yes, you get me. I don’t necessarily delight in pouring hours into a wall but loving my children by pouring out my heart through paint is something I’ll gladly do over and over. Josh was smitten with how his room came together. I think giving him his own art desk spoke to his heart and for me seeing him sit and draw at it for hours speaks to mine.
Thank you for your kind words my friend. Seriously! Thank you.
Big Hugs- Jenny
