Today, I’m showing you the simplest flower planter ever, easy upcycled flower Planter…
It’s week 3 in the Curb Appeal Challenge where myself and 10 other bloggers take on projects with the intention to add more curb appeal to our homes.
Sewing Cabinet to Upcycled Flower Planter
I am pushing to get many of my curb appeal projects done but I have to admit a few of the projects are slow going. Along with several project disasters hiccups, I now have my darling budding (huge sarcasm intended) half grown boys out of school and home with me. Did I mention I work from home? Did I mention my husband also works from home? Yep, one big happy family. ALL DAY EVERY DAY!
So for my project today I needed an easy win. And this upcycled flower planter was so easy I wasn’t even sure I should write about it. But it’s a favorite among the neighbors so I figured you may like it too.
I started by acquiring this little Martha Washington sewing cabinet that is missing it’s top.
By “acquiring” I mean I walked down to my basement and pulled it out of my hoard I mean my eclectic collection of useful items that are stored away for a special day.
“Hey little sewing cabinet, you are being called up. It’s your special day! Please report to front porch for duty.”
I pulled this little guy into the garage and started cleaning him up and giving him several coats of paint. Since the cabinet would be outside I wanted to make sure he got a good protective paint layer. I use a paint sprayer but for this job a can of spray paint would be just as good
.
I added plastic furniture glides to the legs of the soon to be flower planter so the legs would not sit directly on the damp concrete.
After a few good coats of paint, I finished with several coats of polyurethane. I also polyed the insides too since this would be outside. I like the wipe on poly by Minwax. ( This is not a paid endorsement. Its just my opinion and what I buy.)
NOTE: Oil base poly will yellow so I only use it on dark colors where that won’t be a problem. Water base poly is best when you don’t want any yellowing.
I also added a non-draining plastic bucket to the top for my plant to sit in.
Now all that was left was to add a large flowering basket. I used a hanging basket that I picked up at my local green house for under $20. It was huge. I simply removed the hanger and set the pot inside the black bucket.
Wah-la, upcycled flower planter… instant cuteness!

This is still one of my favorite porches.
This is SO much fun! What a beautiful project!
Thank you Julie!
Love this… How creative!!
The color is so fun, may I ask what color it is?
Hi Amy!!! I started with Sherwin Williams 6600 Enticing Red. That was too pink. Actually I liked it but I was trying to be sneakier about the pink so my husband wouldn’t notice and the Enticing Red would have outed me! lol I started adding other colors to my paint mix. I ended up with SW 6865 Gypsy Red. 🙂
What an adorable piece of furniture. I love the makeover. The colour red is a gorgeous and happy colour. One could not help but smile when one sees this filled with all those glorious blossoms.
Thank you Kim. It’s made me happy and was a pleasant surprise when it came together. Thank you so much for stopping by and taking the time to write a nice note.
I hope you have a fabulous day and wonderful weekend.
Blessings, Jenny
